On this page, alumni are able to submit professional or personal news items that they would like to share with the rest of the JP alumni community. We’ll keep you posted on how to do that.

Please keep us up to date with your current contact information. We do try to keep the emails and mailings to a minimum, but it’s important to us to know where our alumni are. We also need to keep track of statistics regarding career information for reporting to government agencies and for recruiting new Joint Program students.

If you have contact information about someone whose listing is incorrect, please notify them or let us know. Below are some of the more recent news items that have been submitted.

What Makes the Great Ocean Currents Flow?

MIT/WHOI Joint Program student Stephanie Waterman was interviewed about her research for an audio slide show produced by Ari Daniel Shapiro, a recent Joint Program graduate.  Stephanie researched the Gulf Stream and Kuroshio for her doctoral thesis.  She is heading to the UK for postdoctoral work.

Sad News

We're sorry to report the death of another alumna, Amy Samuels, after a long illness.  Amy graduated in 1997 with a doctoral degree in Biological Oceanography from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.  More information about Amy's life and research can be found in her obituary

A celebration of Amy’s life will be held in the spring of 2009.  In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Dolphins of Monkey Mia Research Foundation, c/o David and Kayo Burmon, 21 Colchester Road, Weston, MA 02493, or to the Lily Caiming Samuels Education Trust, P.O. Box 117, West Falmouth, MA 02574.

40th Anniversary of MIT/WHOI Joint Program

On May 8, 1968, MIT's Howard Johnson and WHOI's Paul Fye signed a two-page Memorandum of Understanding on the R.V. Chain establishing the MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography/Applied Ocean Science and Engineering. To commemorate the the Joint Program birthday, MIT and WHOI held a science symposium at MIT on Thurday, September 25, 2008, featuring JP alumni as speakers followed by a reception. On Friday, September 26, a career discussion and cookout was held at WHOI.  Thanks to all who joined us to make this a special occasion.
